SNOWMELT UPDATE
Crews Clearing Snow from Curbside Drains and Gutters
City crews continue to work seven days a week to clear snow and ice to aid in the drainage of the spring snowmelt. Curbside drains (catch basins) on major streets and the gutters near these drains are being cleared of snow and to help the water drain off city streets. As the warmer weather continues, crews will also be thawing frozen catch basins. The priority areas will be large water accumulations on major thoroughfares, and areas where the potential exists for property damage from the snowmelt.
In spite of the City’s efforts, there will be some water accumulating on streets and alleys during the snowmelt. Any assistance that the public can safely provide to help reduce pooling water is appreciated.
Residents are encouraged to call the Public Works Branch at 975-2491 to report streets or areas with excessive ponding. Motorists are asked to please be considerate of pedestrians and to slow down to prevent splashing.
Residents Encouraged to Prepare for Snowmelt
Residents are reminded that flood prevention in their homes and yards is their responsibility, and that steps can be taken now to reduce the risk of a snowmelt flood in their basements. Some flood prevention involves snow shoveling which is heavy work. Those with health concerns should get help from friends, family, neighbours, or professionals. Health permitting, consider moving small amounts of snow over several days so it’s not such a big job.
Here are some tips to help residents reduce the risk of a snowmelt flood in their homes:
- Remove snow from around your home’s foundation and window wells.
- Most lots drain along the outside edges. Remove snow from these areas.
- Keep the snow in your yard because shoveling it on to streets or lanes could block drainage.
· Clear snow and ice from around the bottom of your downspouts and extend downspouts at least two meters so water drains away from your foundation.
· Where possible and safe, help clear snow, ice, and debris from the catch basins in your area.
· Check your roof and eaves troughs for excessive snow.
o Consider hiring a professional to clear snow from your roof.
o A roof rake may help you to clear snow and debris from the edge of your roof.
· Consider using sandbags to block water from entering low lying areas beside your foundation.
· If water is getting close to your foundation, use an appropriate pump to drain it to the gutter or back lane.
o Please use all equipment properly and follow safety guidelines.
If residents have questions or concerns about flood prevention for their homes, they should contact a professional.
